Doesn't have to be Deore, what i meant Deore grade is the 'lowest' spec i'd really consider, it can be higher grade or even older kit but i'm really trying to keep the cost as low as possible.
The x9 kit would be ok but i fear its a bit too costly for this build, also i think the front mech needs to be a 28.6. Thanks though C-T-R.

ackie, with 100mm forks the bike is great for fast singletrack type riding. XC racing? Why not? With some light wheels and forks you'd easily get a Soul down to the 22-23lbs mark. If you want another vote for the suitability of the handling, the Soda has identical geometry and Kate Potter (my tame XC racer) has used a Soda with 100mm forks right up to the World Champs. I think that probably covers it

...and have you seen the CW review of them?
i personally prefer Campag - the new lever shape is pretty good with a nice selection of hand positions available. I do have a 105 bike - Trek Portland - its ok, but nothing special, and I can see that the lever throw would be difficult for people with small hands.

Ah yes... Nothing says "dodgy officer" more than having a beret that looks like a helicopter landing pad. Top tip: remove the plastic thingy from inside the beret first, possibly even the lining too, before shaping.

Top tip #2: when wetting beret with hot water, do not get the leather bit wet or it will shrink too much to wear.

+1 on the Campag hood shape.

Less of a issue now seeing as 2009 campag levers and 2009 onwards new shimano levers have converged on a virtually identical lever shape.

Campag stuff tends to look less tatty with usage; there's no lacquer on the levers that is obvious when it rubs off, something I hated with Shimano 105 levers I had.

All comes down to personal preference I guess.

No - Godman is indeed a bit of a nancy boy. Parks is no better though - I was hoping for Mossy at 10 with Southwell at 15. Even switching those 2 would be better.

I reckon Mike Blair is a better stand off than Parks, not to mention Rory Hutton who could be a real class act given the chance.

Looking at buying a light XC race frame for later in the year and was pretty much decided on the Kinesis Km-210L as geometry wise it looks very good for me (I'm only 5'3"/4") and I like the talk of slimmer seat-stays, etc for lighter female riders. It's also had good reviews and looks like good value for £255 online.

However, I then stumbled across the Dirty Jo triple butted frame, which is only 100-150grams heavier and only £99!

Thing is - will it ride as well?

I don't have any experience of riding alu hardtails (other than a cheap giant) as I've only had steel (incl. 853) and ti in the past, but I'm presuming some are a lot more forgiving than others while others are more stiffer and more responsive...

Can anyone shed some light on how these two might differ, or offer any alternative suggestions?

Basically I'm willing to spend more if its a better frame, but if it's just down to the name, then I'd rather spend the difference elsewhere on the bike.

(My main limiting factors are it has to be frame only and small enough!)

prefer the shape of Campag, plus i think it looks nicer. But i do have a steel road bike and the polished finish of the campag kit i have seems more appropriate
