apologies if this has been done already

just watched the ITV4 coverage of le tour.

what do we reckon to the the Halfrauds advert showing mtb'ers skidding into corners, or for that matter the commuter cyclist quite clearly riding on the pavement - the outrage!

Right – a few words about my test ride of the Turner Sultan – XXL (23” frame) ridden. I’m 6’7” tall, weigh in at 250lbs, so a rare treat to actually get to test ride a bike of this size!

I was in the USA visiting family and found out that Competitive Cyclist were 200 miles from my mother in law – then that they were 25 miles from my brother in law! When they confirmed they had an XXL Sultan on the test fleet, I tweaked our visit so I could get there and ride. A massive thanks to Ryan and the guys at CS – made me feel really welcome, nothing was too much bother and the directions to the trails very accurate. So, on a day of high 90s temperatures and humidity, I rode a genuine monster truck of a bike.

Initially, the bike looks right at that size – even 29er haters would have to agree on that one. It weighed 30lbs all up - pretty good for all that bike.

It always helps when something looks right. I’d have wider bars, but the rest felt pretty good. Initial mile on tarmac was smooth and almost no pedal bob even when trying. It felt like it picked up speed more than my own 29er and really span along with little effort. Once I found the singletrack (twisty, turny, up & down, rooty, rocky) I could give it a blast.

The bike really responded well from the off. I noticed the sharp steering straight away and this continued as a theme throughout. I guess this goes with the newer geometry of the bike and the forks and I loved it. As expected, 29er wheels with 2.3 tyres on just ate up the trail (but the clearance is there on the frame for British mud)

and rolled over small stuff without it registering. The suspension added to that so much that I could remain seated for far more of the ride and pile on the pedalling - which led to me having to stop as my lungs couldn’t cope with full on riding in that heat and humidity! When not drinking water, I played with the air in the sus – dropping the pressure a little bit to feel how the bike would be when sitting further down. It was better for pointing it down hills but still rode very well overall.

I did my best to throw it around and the stiffness was noticeable – even my tubby ass couldn’t force any flex in the frame or the wheels and that added to the growing confidence in the bike. I did my best to put myself in awkward positions with the bike (oo-er) and it never flickered – held the line, responded and climbed superbly – standing or seated. The front end felt a little light, but with 20mm more travel than my own bike I expected that.

Overall, I got the ride down to this:

In the ‘forward, up and down’ directions, this felt like a great 29er with all the advantages that brings. In the ‘left, right, turny’ directions, this felt like a great 26er with all the responsiveness that brings. The competent suspension ate up so much of the smaller stuff and enabled me to pedal more, which in turn made me ride quicker – so I wanted to push faster. I hope this is a good thing – it may end up hurting more!
Yes – I’ll be buying one – but I have some things to sell and trips to unfortunate places to make first – before 2010 I hope!

I was suffering by the time this picture was taken - sweating like a fat lass in a chocolate factory and breathing was laboured! Not my optimum riding temperature.

I have to read the eulogy at my Granddads funeral next week.

I'm not usually the emotional sort but the trouble is that the eulogy (written by my Uncle) has me in pieces every time I read it.

I'n not trying to be hard and unemotional, I just don't want to look like a muppet spluttering my way through it. Any advice on how to approach this?

Bike came with the above forks on, about 5 months ago.
The ride is like a demented pogo stick.
I have tried a wide range of air pressures, & rebound settings. If they are soft enough to not be too bouncy they bottom out - if you hit a rock they bottom out & the bike nose dives. Even going down fast tracks he front end is skipping all over place, so on loose stuff that feels horrible. There seems to be a lot is stiction too.
Any ideas please!!

after only 3 months use the amount of play in my atomblab aircorp pedals is alarming,im a 9st rider & im normally light on parts.

they cost £90.00 and should the play be covered under warranty or is it classed as wear & tear.

they use du bushes over bearings.

if warranty is no thenat somepoint i will have to rebuild them or change them what is the most reliable platform pedal you guys reccomend.

Brand new never been used/fitted! Too short for me unfortunately, so it's up for sale. It completely unmarked, complete with Thomson bag, and ready to fit. 1 1/8 steerer, OS bars. I'm after £45 posted by standard first class.

I would consider a swap for a 90mm x 15 degree standard diameter clamp stem (Thomson or Hope).

We're off to Chamonix valley later in the month.
I believe that mtbs are banned from footpaths in July. How far does this restriction extend?

So what mtb-friendly routes (with ups, downs and technicality) would people recommend in the area surrounding Chamonix?

What are the best cable-car accessed routes in that part of the world?

well there's a day of my life I'll never get back.

3 hours to get, what, 7 miles from the A17 to the airshow? Who on earth was in charge of traffic management? It wasn't the police, they were too busy hiding in the shade watching the queues not moving.

I suppose I was lucky that I could actually see the Red Arrows do their thing from a great distance :-(

Then the site was huge, and yet only 2 toilets & 1 burger van. For 200,000 people.

And the flying displays? well they were ok but I can see how they managed to spread it out over 7 hours.

"oh look dear there's a helicopter". wait 10 minutes. "there it is again". wait another 10 minutes. "well I think that was it from him". Wait another 20 minutes. "ooh look some fast jets" "yes, they were very fast, and now they've gone"

couldn't be arsed to wait for the Vulcan, if it ever turned up. Last thing I saw was the BBMF circling the airfield as we drove away

If you make and sell lights .

This is my take on the DX bike light .
thanks to Martin who bought one and kindly sent it to me to pull apart and give it the once over

First up very nice box even with magnetic closures

WEIGHTS AND SIZES
I will let the pics tell this bit

On Opening the box I was shocked a little on the actual size of the thing as I try to make my lights as small as possible , this is tiny .
And looks on the outside to be a real nice product
the battery is neat and well packaged with a good connector set
I cant see any problems at all from the outside so time to have a look a little deeper.

first before unscrewing the the bezel I did a very non techy test the seal
this involved sucking with the whole bezel in my mouth to creat a vacuum and you can soon tell if it is sealed and it passed with flying colours no leaks there.

I also did the same test on the switch end and that was good too .

No real issues so far The alloy in side is very soft and poor quality but not a problem
there were signs of small bits of swarfe around but so far not in any place to cause shorts.

the first main niggle shows itself the screw holding the mount only 2 threads holding the thing together
ok as the second pic shows it cannot be too long but a couple more threads would be better

just prior to unscrewing the retainer ring I did notice this large piece of swarfe hiding there.
the bits on the right are just stringy plastic

Still nothing too bad found yet but was a bit concerned about the swarf inside with the driver board . I was just going to reassemble it as it belonged to some one else but after I saw the swarfe it need cleaning out so dismantled it and found that the P7 on its star was glued to the heatsink with a clear epoxy .

So this was removed and the star glued back in with Arctic Alumina epoxy
then it was just a reversal to reassemble

some thermal past on the heatsink and screw threads of the retainer
and some silicon round the cable . and I did put in a slightly longer screw to hold the bracket

Ok so now some thoughts .

When I first plugged it in the first thing I did was just sit it on the desk and wait to see how hot it got and how fast , now this is a rare sunny day in blighty with a nice 20 degree c ambient temp and after 7 minutes it was quite warm getting hotter than I would normally like so I ended the test and started the take down .

I was quite pleased it was getting warm as this meant some transfer of heat was happening.
The worrying thing about this is after the rebuild it got very hot real quickly like 3 minutes
so in very high ambients it stands a good chance of overheating the led .

Also I am just 1.5 hours in to a runtime test with a desk fan on full blowing over the light and is has stabilised at 35 degrees c so I dread to think what the internal temps could get to if I had not added the thermal epoxy and paste

No beam shots to compare it with my other lights yet but will try and get some tonight

so as it stands it looks like it will take quite a few sales away from the main light makers
and also makes DIY seem a bit daft as there is no way you could build a light of this quality for the price . including battery and charger.

The main failings I think will be the mount breaking as you stretch the oring round the bars or pulling the bolt out of the 2 threads holding it
, possibly overheating issues in warmer climes than the uk if the user is not carefull to switch to low in times of low airflow

also maybe the cable pulling out of the light when the mount breaks in a stack .

I cannot comment ot the electronics as I know nothing about them suffice to say the quality is no where near Taskled stuff

I would like to say it is rubbish dont buy it but Cant as I would buy one if I was in the market for a budget light .
