Could someone help me please? I am trying to work out the potential gear ratios i would have if i was running a 1x10 (32 chainring with 11-36 cassette) up in comparison to my current 2x9 (22&32 chainrings with 11-32 cassette)
The simple set up of 1x10 appeals but at the moment i mainly ride in the granny so worried about the potential loss of super easy climbing gears.
This might help:

I just do it like this:
32 / 36 = 0.8888
22 / 32 = 0.6875
That is certainly loosing a bit of low, but it isn't awful. Put your current bike into granny ring up front, and nearest to 25 tooth at the back, and that will approximate it.
I like K-gear that Ben at Kinetics made to see the ratios.
Open two windows up and compare - you'll need to sneak in the 10spd but it will still work - lovely bit of kit.

In my local forest I mostly use the granny (22). I'm thinking I might try 1 x 10 but with a 24 or 26... I'll be spun out on the road home but managing all the techy climbs I love. Do what works for you rather than follow fashion, baaa.
Thanks 7hz, that helps alot.
messiah-I am not sure why but I was under the impression that if I was running a single ring with a chain retention device such as MRP 1x I would have to use the middle ring position which is usually limited to 32t or larger.
If not I will be doing what you plan with a 24 or 26.....
You've got me there groundskeeperwilly, I've thought about it but not done it so no idea if it will work. Probably need to bodge something... which is a speciality subject of mine ๐
If you want an identical ratio to your current 22 front, 32 rear then a quick reckoning is that you'll need a 46 rear cog to run with the 32t front.... ๐ฏ
24/36 would give you about the same ratio. To be honest, I'd just leave as it with the double on the front.
You could leave the 32t ring on as a 'bashguard' and try one of those chainkeepers ("Jump stop" I think) that is just a plate attached to the seattube. Suddenly it isn't as 'simple' anymore and it's almost worth leaving the front mech on and a shifter.....
There is a thread on mtbr somewhere from a chap who runs a 22 or 24 front. I think he uses a BlackSpire Granny God bashring and a jump stop. I can't access mtbr from here to search for it. Probably not a super light solution ๐
One of my bikes has a HammerSchmidt which has shown me that I mostly only need the granny gears - pretty much only use the overdrive for road sections or rough doonhalls where it's mostly used to keep more tension on the chain (bigger sprocket at the back = tighter chain).
