Had a fall - that ended my ride yesterday - doing a 21 miler around Hayfield in the Peak District - down hill section - loose rocks, over bars landing on a rock .....

Nice 'egg' on my thigh - day 1 (Sunday) after the ride ......

[img] [/img]

😕

Knee !

[img] [/img]

Day 2 - the swelling has spread out and turned a lovely shade of purple !!

[img] [/img]

Bloody extreme sports !!

Impressive how the bruise and tattoo are so colour coordinated, it's hard to tell where one ends and the other starts in the third picture!

If mountain biking isn't an extreme sport, I'd love to know why kite buggying which is, terrified me more.
That's a specatcular bruise. Nice work sir ;O)

kite buggying scares you because it's hard when you get ripped out of the buggy and dragged face first down the beach. I find kitesurfing (very definitely classed as extreme) much less painful and scary!

Dope on a rope.... [first cocked up jump attempt!]
[img] [/img]

That bruise really is a stonker - if the bruising gets too large I'd be tempted by a trip to the docs/hospital. IIRC one of the thigh bones has a fairly hefty blood supply - could it have been damaged or am I just scare mongering?

I think if he had damaged the bone significantly he would know - there is a the potential for a collection of blood deep in the muscle tho - which would need medical attention

DH would class as extreme though wouldn't it?
Normal MTB isn't neither is climbing, surfing or diving.

might not be extreme but it's bloody dangerous (for me anyway it seems)
snapped the ligament off my little finger before christmas, and chipped the middle bone in my thumb three weeks ago.

oh and managed to golf ball my left knee at margam yesterday

Looks like he knows about it to me!!

backhander - define extreme I suppose. If you ask insurance companies any sort of MTB other than on prepared family trails is extreme.

For interests sake:

In 2004, author Joe Tomlinson classified extreme sports into those that take place in air, land, and water,[9]

Nine air sports are mentioned including: BASE jumping, bungee jumping, gliding, hang gliding, high wire, ski jumping, sky diving, sky surfing, and sky flying.

Eighteen land sports including: indoor climbing, adventure racing, aggressive inline skating, BMX, caving, extreme motocross, extreme skiing, freestyle skiing, land and ice yachting, mountain biking, mountain boarding, outdoor climbing, sandboarding, skateboarding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, speed biking, speed skiing, scootering and street luge.

Fifteen water sports including: barefoot water skiing, cliff diving, free-diving, jet skiing, open water swimming, powerboat racing, round the world yacht racing, scuba diving, snorkeling, speed sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, whitewater kayaking, windsurfing.Extreme Sports: In Search of the Ultimate Thrill. Hove: Firefly Books Ltd. ISBN 1-55297-992-X.

see that's the perspective you have if you can't bunnyhop 😆

once you actively look for reasons to get your wheels off the ground things change (and no, i don't want to see that pic of the back wheel of a tandem a mm off the floor).

go on 🙂

Its still no extreme sport - its not even a sport unless you are racing and an extreme sport is one where you die if you get it wrong. Lets face it most of us its a pootle around in the woods with the odd jump or dropoff. hardly life threatening.

DH racing is a bit different

Any sport that requires you to sit in a buggy isn't extreme 🙂

remind me what the rules for cross country riding are then?

Its a sport if its racing - otherwise its a pastime 🙂

And it ain't an extreme sport unless you are doing DH racing or real freeeride stuff

I've had a few painful falls down the local jumps over the last fortnight. Definitely getting some pads when the ones I want come back in stock. Not being able to walk properly because of swollen knees isn't much fun.

Indoor climbing an extreme sport now?...Well s'pose you might forget to tie in (like you might forget to look before stepping out infront of a bus..)
Outdoor climbing? Sport climbing and bouldering no; soloing and ground-up new routing very definately yes.
The current prefered method of cheating on dangerous routes is called Headpointing (pre-practice on a top rope)? It depends on the likelyhood of someone else improving on your style of ascent IMO.

@pook - TJ hooker in woolly pants! I can't stop laughing.

@chickenman - Anecdotal but took a friend climbing outdoors for the first time a few years ago, he paired off with another mate who was leading and about 25 feet up (admittedly only a VDiff) when the newbie shouted over to ask me what he was supposed to do with the other end of the rope. Needless to say we got him on belay very quickly but very quietly!
