If you fancy building yourself a free fork for your fatbike, look here

A simple rigid fork with variable ride height and offset.

The lowers are from a junk Zoom fork – couldn't get much lower than that 🙂

    Thought of that.

Can't slip down, the stanchions are resting against solid spacers at the bottom of the lowers.

In any case I'm using seat clamps, and they can hold a seat under impact. There's one each side so the forces are approx half what the seatpost gets.

    do video your rides.

You realise your wheels are clamped in with less surface area and tension than these forks have on their clamps, don't you?

I will report and show pics of my toothless state if they fail though 🙂

    WTF relevance is that?

I thought you were being cynic-al about the fork holding together. Sorry.

i like it – i might get in on that action shortly 😀

The rim is temporary. It's a wheel I built up for a 1,000 km overland in Oz 9 years ago and was the fattest rim I could get at the time (40mm).

Got a set of 100s on the way, although I suspect around 80 is the optimum.

Wait until you see the bodge I have dreamt up to make a fatbike frame 🙂

In the meantime, I'll stick this on the Scandal.

Nice handy work. Must admit this is the first time I've heard of a 'fat bike' – is this just another niche thingy? Big draggy tyre in front? What are the advantages?

May well hold up fine…as I said on another thread I'd be concerned about the forces on the bottom of the sliders. I was just poking fun at your stats above and their relevance.

Thanks. I've been over a lot of the eastern end of his route. I lived there.

It's hard to stay alive in that country. No matter how well you plan it, luck plays a large part in your chances of survival. (Unless you are followed by a 4wd support, in which case it's just another plastic adventure)

    Quite an epic.
