    Hi

I know quite a few Designers frequent the hallowed halls of STW, so I’m calling for a bit of help.

I need to add a line of text to an existing artwork, but I don’t have the font and work is not prepared to pay for the font. Would it be possible for someone to type out the following line of text, then outline it and send it as either an AI or eps file.

    FONT – NEO SANS LIGHT

    ‘SUPPLIED WITH 90mm HIGHFLOW WASTE’

    email in profile

    Thanks in advance

work is not prepared to pay for the font.

Therefore possibly don’t have the legal right to use it….

Not a problem if an outlined file is created by someone who does have the rights though.

But (on a point of principle) why would a designer help line the pockets of some employer that is too tight to fork out themselves?

(Ohh, and I don’t have that font so I can’t help anyway).

I don’t have it either, but I just Googled it, what so good about that font? It looks (as a layman) pretty ordinary to me?

Also, do you have the right to modify the existing artwork? Shouldn’t you be asking the designer? 😛

Don’t have it anyway, but if I did, it would cost you almost as much to pay me for my time, as it would for your tightarse company to buy it. 😉

    Or, to be a little more helpful;

Do the text in a similar font, then convert to curves, then adjust until it’s the same as Neo Sans Light. Might take a bit of time, but it saves your tightarse company from having to pay for it I spose.

No I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be unhelpful, but this company’s taking the piss really. And trying to get someone to do something for nowt, for possible commercial gain is out of order in my book. If the OP had said it was for say a charity or themselves, then maybe a little favour in exchange for some good karma/couple of beers is ok. I’m not having a pop at the OP btw, as they’re probbly just trying to get a job done, and can’t see it from the other point of view.

And I’ve offered a possible alternative course of action…

Well thanks all for your help and assistance with my query, remind me to save my piss if I see you burning 😐

I hope to return the same generosity and kindness in the future.

Ruddy hell there’s some folk riding very high horses today!* Is there a designer in the land who hasn’t requested a little help with a font from time to time!?

Ruminant – I if had that font I’d do it for you.

(*especially you Fred as I’ve helped you in the past)

I’m not against doing someone a favour at all. I’ve done stuff for people on here, they’ve helped me out. What goes around comes around.

No, what I object to, and I know that others will agree with me, is the way companies are forever trying to get something for nowt, without respecting other people’s profession and craft.

‘Oh you could just knock it up in a few minutes, won’t be no hassle for you’.

No, just like it’s been no hassle to spend thousands and thousands of pounds on computer hardware and software, electricity, books etc; no hassle to dedicate thousands of hours to learning to use specialist software; no hassle trying to earn a pound coin in an increasingly competitive industry which is pretty depressed atm. No, no hassle at all.

Sorry, Ruminant, but that’s how I and others see it. I hope you can respect and appreciate where we’re coming from.

Now, had you perhaps offered a few quid, donation to charity, bottle of something nice etc, maybe your request may have been taken in a better light.

Or perhaps its just personal pride in the job?

Perhaps neither the customer nor employer ‘need’ the text to be in the same font, but ruminant would rather do the job right as he see it than turn out something that doesn’t look right.

I’ve completely re-drawn logos etc in my own time as I didn’t want to produce some sort of hatchet job using a shitty jpeg.

If the client and employer are demanding they match then thats slightly different, but for one line of text I’d still help out.

Elfin – fair enough taking that stance if its your own cash/company.

For balance; I’ve asked for a bit of legal advice on another thread. I’m not asking for legal representation, or for someone to spend hours pouring over legal stuff. Just thought someone might be able to steer me right.

I’ve done the same sort of thing here:

Do the text in a similar font, then convert to curves, then adjust until it’s the same as Neo Sans Light.

So, I’m offering advice based on specialist knowledge. That’s what I’d do, if I were in the OP’s situation.

What I wouldn’t do, is ask someone to spend time on something, without at least offering them something for their trouble. I’d respect their craft/pride in their job/need to earn a living.

Basically I’m not going to offer an incentive as I wouldn’t expect one if was doing a person a one off favour.

We obviously have difference of opinion, which I respect that is your view

On a side note, a mate has just fowarded me what I required, so thanks for everybodys input helpful or not 🙂

I was going to offer to help, but I’ve vowed never ever ever to get involved in any online talk of fonts ever ever ever ever again. Under any circumstances.

To the extent where I now employ a sniper to have his cross-hairs fixed on my big baldy bonce all the time I am online. Should I get involved in a font related thread, thengDSvd’AKGINOH]]]]HGG]GJ:”<s\’a>>DKT0334T[dfpo=f-K’V`,M\LBMVZBVNMZCN0ENgkjrw0—-gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

“We want this font, but we don’t want to buy it.”

    And I’d like a Ferrari.

In seriousness, I’d be suggesting that the way around this would be to redo all the text on the existing document, using a font you do own. Then a) it’ll match rather than looking ad-hoc, and b) you won’t be in the same boat next time they want a change.

Regarding the attitudes here – I don’t think it’s directed personally at the OP so much as the company. I’d be of the same mind if I worked there – “we want this, but we’re not paying for it” – “well, you can’t have it then.”

Basically I’m not going to offer an incentive as I wouldn’t expect one if was doing a person a one off favour.

Why would you expect someone to do your and your company a ‘favour’? I’m assuming this is a commercial operation, from the limited information the text suggests.

Would you pop into a cafe, and say ‘do us a quick bacon butty, for nowt, cheers’?

Ok so, to explain my viewpoint further:

If someone on here said ‘ooh could some kind person just sort some text out that’s going on our charity’s/club’s t-shirts please?’ or something like that, the I’d think ‘yeah, no problem’. But what you’re asking, is for someone to do something for free, to help you with something I assume you get paid for?

Interesting slant on what constitutes a ‘favour’, I must say…

I’m absolutely with Elfin on this. I have done similar things in the past, when I actually worked in a studio and had full access to all the kit, but it was inevitably for businesses that my employer had some connection with, on the understanding that there would be reciprocal jobs, or else a big bag of donuts. Otherwise, I’ve spent many happy hours matching existing type or logos with a similar font converted to curves then tweaked to match.
    *Sigh*, happy days…
