Yeah I'm sure loads of people will post pics of their bike sat in a load of snow and pretend that they were riding it and having fun, but this really isn't the weather for it.
It is however stunning weather for a bit of winter walking/climbing/mountaineering etc.
(not my pic)
I'm still too ill to do anything very extreme, but I had a stunning walk in the Howgills the other day.

(sorry phone pic)
hopefully heading out to the northern lakes this weekend (with ice axe). the weather up here (just over the border) is set to be blue skies and cold weather, so not too much more snow planned.
can't wait, will be the first time in almost 2 years!
Recently gave-in to this sensible philosophy (due to frozen free-wheel woes). Staying right on the Pentlands, there's miles of trails to do after all, albeit barely needing crampons etc. Plus SWMBO & myself can enjoy some quality time & take the good camera -

Yeah superb winter rambling. Thinking about Brecon Beacons or Dartmoor this weekend as I can day trip them from home.
Deffo the thing to be doing at the mo. Pity my ice climbing partner is in Canada; I'll just have to make do with good long winter walks. Much better than fighting to stay on the bike and going nowhere.
that top pic isn't where i thought on second look, where is it? gate and wall / snow levels were same in wales south of tryfan though, really deep in places.
your wrong, this is the perfect weather for turbo training... ๐
That's Catstye Cam isn't it? Striding Edge just peeking in on the left. Must be from somewhere near Hole in the Wall.
+1 to this thread. I was on top of Scafell Pike at midnight on New Year's.
Followed by a standing glissade from Mickledore down to Hollow Stones, by moonlight ๐
Jenga - correct on the first pic. From the lake district weatherline site.
Here's my pic from last February of the other side at the same spot
Couple more from last year

Love the Ingleborough pic Pennine - I might just about be able to manage that at the mo in fact.
Jenga - reckon you are right. I was stood exactly there on Friday after some pottering on Red Tarn Crags and Striding edge although all I could see was the wall once the weather had turned. Very grateful to find it as navigation conditions were aweful!
Tried riding up on Hexham common yesterday. I agree with OP!

Fairfield next Saturday? Just a short stroll from Ambleside.
Just for tasters:-

Im sure my wife uses crampons......
Me about fifteen years ago (anyone guess the route? it's a classic)
Looks a bit like Bowfell Buttress, but it's probably not.

Only in the shower - stops her feet sliding down the tiles.
a bit like Bowfell Buttress
In Scotland actually (should have been more specific...)
I'd have to guess at one of the gullies on The Ben, but I've not climbed enough up there to be sure.
Answer please.....
Five Point Gully?
somewhere on the Ben? Point five, but only because it's the most famous
Five Point Gully?
Point Five Gully surely. That would have been my choice, but as we don't know eliptic's abilities it could well be Sassenach!!!

Five Point Gully?

North East buttress

Looks a bit like Orion Face Direct
We have a winner (it's the Second Slab Rib pitch).
as we don't know eliptic's abilities it could well be Sassenach!!!
A flattering suggestion but not likely!
"standing glissade"
That's skiing without skis isn't it?
That's skiing without skis isn't it?
Basically yes. Only works when the snow is just right - too soft and you sink in, too hard/icy and you go like a rocket ๐ฏ with no chance of stopping.
You see it demonstrated in all the old mountaineering instructional books (Blackshaw etc) but quite rarely get the chance to actually try it...
"too hard/icy and you go like a rocket "
yes of course, that's when you need the sitting glissade with an ice axe handle used as a brake; I've done that as a quick way down Ben Eighe. Lots of things can go wrong tho including stabbing yourself with the ice axe! It's all sailing quite close to disaster really! ๐
Around late March / April on Ben Nevis you often get a mini Cresta run developing down the Red Burn from all the bumsliders - three or four feet deep, swooping all the way down, can be 1500 feet of descent to the snowline ๐
