I am after some advice??

When I was in California last year riding, we were told on several occasions about the riding in 'San Juan' and how good it was - can anyone shed anymore light on this? i.e. where exactly is the good riding in the area (a Google Map reference would be good?)?

Thanks in advance.

"San Juan" is a popular MTB trail in Orange County, which is only about 400 miles south of where I live, so I have never ridden it.

The San Juan Mountains are in Colorado. Not the same place.

I've ridden the san juan trail(s) in orange county

S-J trail is up (6miles singletrack - sandy, bit eroded in parts), round (6miles), back (guess what?) - great trail I think. I do it once or twice every time I'm over there (July or August - BASTARD hot unless you go early). There's other trails in the immediate area too - los pinos is quite well known

No idea how it compares to the stuff you've done before, further north

Not sure I can do google map links but if this fails, google "lazy w ranch, ortega highway". On the google map you can clearly see the switchbacks at the start of the ride (just south of the lazy w on hot spring cyn road). You need a parking permit (forest parks pass I think - SPort Chalet sells them)

you can prob find GPS routes here

To make it more worth a trip, closeish routes at Laguna - (telonics etc, if you like "famous names") and also the luge above whiting ranch (can climb right up the mountain & do the luge on way back if you wish)

(I can suggest a guidebook(s) - or lend you one if you can return it by end of July)

Hey Charlie! Hope all is well? Yep, it is SJT we are looking at in OC and we'll be looking at this much later than we are at Mt. Tam. Cheers for the heads up though!

All the links worked great - thank you buddy! As for the lend of guide books that would also be great, but I need them in September, so if it would be possible to borrow them after July.....THAT WOULD BE TOP!?

aliso-woods canyon park (or something) is pretty much AT the beach

I've only been one brief visit. It's a smallish area with lots of trials in there. Quite busy (bikes and walkers) and there seems to be a kind of set of rules for using some for ascent and some for descent, so I'd take advice. Any bike shop could give you a map, I bet

Some of the trails are pretty technical - it's quite a steep valley. I was told that one famously has a "fatal" drop-off towards the end of the trail but I didn't ride that one, but be careful what;s in front of you

I don't think you could really get lost in there as it is q small

I rode at Aliso-woods Canyon last time I was there and it is a great ride out and like scaredypants says - it is quite easy to navigate around, just as you start to get into it the trail (after the car park) is a map board if I remember rightly? But there were plenty of riders around when we were there who were all too happy to show us around! ๐Ÿ˜€

@rs. Go to Laguna Cycles. They sell a map of the local trails and will rent you a bike! Lots of stuff accessible from town
