Went to see him do the first talk of his tour last night in Durham.
I though he was excellent. Self effacing and humble. Talked through both his round the world ride and his Americas ride through photos and video clips. Definitely recommend any of his upcoming dates!!

Yeah I went to see a talk he did in Edinburgh last year. Talk was really interesting and he seemed like a nice guy.

Looking forward to seeing latest TV prog on his Americas ride next week

He set the round the world record IIRC?

Some mentalist on a TT bike has to set one at some point surely, its only a 27500mile time trial :-p how hard can it be?

Yeah that looked nice from a distance! What was it? Couldn't make it out! I did like the look of his Koga though - especially the Rohloff hub!! Got me planning my own.......

Saw him at Keswick last year and really enjoyed it, although I didn't think that his talk / presentation was as good as Graham O'Bree's (who was on before him)

For a different perspective of what he did try reading this.

just looked up the tour dates seems a bit odd with only 3 dates in scotland and nothing really in the central belt closest is stirling

Ooooh that looks interesting, I was glued to the Documentary when that was on…

Just to clarify, it definitely is the round the world Mark Beaumont and not the DH racing Mark Beaumont as the latter can barely string a sentence together from what I’ve seen…

Barca2 - I though that but apparently it wasn't verified by Guiness World Records for whatever reason. He's still the fastest round the world!!
Definitely is the round the world beaumont!

Read his round the world book and enjoyed it although he did come accross as arrogant, I suppose you do need some arrogance with what he has done.

He's definitely not arrogant in the flesh. I guess that spending 6 months on your own makes you a certain kind of person!

Saw him after his round the world trip. I thought he was very good ( I hadn't seen the tv shows ) and inspired me on my End2End . Good guy.

midlifecrisis - that blog you posted the link to. He comes across as a complete prat. Has he got a personal vendetta with Mark?

Looking forward to seeing him on Friday in Halifax. Work colleagues think I'm mad going to listen to a bloke talk about cycling.

dickydutch - I don't really know too much about him. I was just interested in reading a different perspective.

Personally, I think what Mark did was amazing and it must have taken massive amounts of dedication and devotion to achieve his record. I did feel that he came across as privelidged when I saw him speak, but that is certainly no reason to think less of his achievement.

My understanding of the blog I linked to is that the writer wanted to prove that you can set world records without having to have support from large corporations and that it is possible to do these sorts of adventures without them being for charity. He is clearly an angry person and has a bit of an axe to grind with Mark.

I don't agree with all of his points but I do like to read alternative perspectives. It made me think hard about my own views about Mark's ride.

As I understand it, he has beaten Mark's record but is waiting for the record to be confirmed by Guiness.

Mark confirmed last night that both record attempts completed by others in the last few months have fallen foul of Guiness rules - for whatever reason. They never disclose why apparently.

That guy on the blog came across to me as a complete drongo. He referred to Beaumont as something he scrapes off his chamois (paraphrased)!! I'm pretty sure he has no reason to call him that other than he had a decent backing for his trip. Perhaps thats what becomes of you living in London!!
I agree with reading alternative perspectives - in this instance, I have read enough of his perspective to confirm him as an angry, bitter, twisted muppet, who I'm glad has come up short of the record.

dickydutch

good points:)

I did like the way that the blog made me wonder if it bothered me that Mark had a huge amount of financial support behind him (not really). It also made me question what an 'adventure' really is.

I didn't like the way that he seemed very negative about everything.

Reading Julians blog made me think he probably pops up on here from time to time. 😆

He certainly does come across as a bit of a cock and a failure to appreciate what other people do. Not having spoken to MB I don't know he can even begin to understand exactly what MB was doing and why. And is what MB did such a bad thing? I don't get the stance that because he was sponsored it wasn't in any way at all an adventure. What a cock!

Anyway, I am sure MB would be quite interesting to listen to if he talks of some of what he saw and experienced. I think he did a documentary on it as well which aired a while back. Was interesting to watch although lacked something to really draw you in to the sense of adventure.

I'm not bothered about the funding of a project - all of these trips need them, whether the Terra Nova expedition or this - though it may be interesting to compare achievements in light of differing levels of funding, but that is really a sideshow from the fact that these guys have battered themselves on bikes around the world.

Though Alastair Humphreys is more my kind of adventurer...

Interestingly, MB said last night that he doesn't see himself as a cyclist - more of an adventurer. It did take him some time to say that though after beuing questioned by a member of the audience!!
I certainly wish I could get the funding he has to do something like that.

I'd have loved to see the "this is not for charity" guy foaming at the mouth when he got the "sorry, you've not got the record" letter from Guinness. Childish I know, but there we go.

Well me and a mate are planning our own Americas trip in September. Same destination different jump off point. I want to say we are not copying him as this plan has been going for the last 2 years, but if we are so what. It doesn't matter 🙂

Would like to see MB speak but he isnt coming anywhere near Oxfordshire.

Just back from his Halifax 'gig'. He comes across as an ordinary guy that has done extraordinary things. His approach on the second trip seemed to be better as he wasn't racing a record and could 'experience things' more rather than always being in a rush. Looking forward to the first programme next Tuesday.

Saw the MB talk in Durham too and personally thought it lacked grit and emotion!
Money or not no-one can deny he has done an amazing thing but he played it down alot. I'm not saying he should throw it in our faces but give more of a real idea of the obstacles he faced and suffering he went through. I'm not going to mention some of the 'real life' events that he endured so as not to ruin it for anyone going to see him but these didnt seem to phase him much. I dont know maybe he has just told that many people of his experiences that some of the emotion has now gone. It all seems a bit easy with him and like theres something missing.
I left feeling a bit flat and uninspired really. I got more out of the questions from the audience.
