    Hi,

I’m going to be ferrying my young son to nursery over the next 6 months, and need a lock that will satisfy some, ideally all, of the following pre-requisites.

    1) Fairly lightweight and compact as I’ll be carrying it in my messenger bag.
    2) Fairly long (i.e. long enough to secure the frame/fork/wheels if possible).
    3) Secure (goes without saying).

I’m flexible over points 1 and 2, but I reckon my insurance company would insist on point 3 being as good as possible.

I have a lock at home that secures the bikes in the shed, so need one I can carry out and about without giving myself a hernia.
    Cheers guys,

    Andy

Are you just going to be locking it at the nursery or is that just one stop on a grand tour?

Nursery, then train station, then back to nursery.

Abus D54. (the one with the square section “U”

Seems to be the one that wins most of the tests. Bigger and lighter than my Kryptonite one too.

I’ve got a Kryptonite New York. The shackle is long through to fit through a post/bike rack/fence, rear triangle and back wheel, without leaving much room to spare. It is heavy, but I leave my bike unattended for long periods in Glasgow every day, and, touch wood, I’ve never had a bike nicked. For me that’s worth a heavier bag.

So temporarily locked at the nursery for a ‘few’ minutes but then left all day at the station?

The kyptonite New York Fahgettaboudit gets some decent reviews for an all round lock, though U-locks are more secure for the most part (unless you go 13/16mm shackles – which would weigh a bomb).

But I’d suggest something lightweight like a kyptonite krptoflex cable and small U-lock like a Motorcycle (Evolution) disc lock for you temp stop @ the nursery and then leave something more secure @ the station?
(though ask first about their policy on locks left chained to the rails)

Or you could try something like http://www.hiplok.com

Thanks for the feedback so far guys – I’d hope I could find something suitable from the suggestions provided.
