Hi
I just used the wheel builder on their web site and selected the following
Mavic 819 rims
Black db spokes
Red evo switch hubs and It's come to a total of £259 which seems very reasonable. Are any of the STW massive using superstar wheels and how are they performing?
How would the above spec compare to say ZTR Flows with hope Pro2 and would they be worth the extra cost over the superstars?
Thanks
Shepdon

They're a cartridge bearing hub, so if they die prematurely then you'll be able to get more bearing easily. Heard stories that they aren't that well built, but if you can true your own wheels that won't be an issue.

Careful Flashy you'll get glassed. Dangerous place, a SS Components thread....

Seen some close up; they look every bit as good as loads of other (often much more spensive) wheelsets. Heard some good things about them too.

I've got the EVO hubs and Crests which they have on offer, and they are good for the money. The build wasn't perfect and the non drive side spokes needed tensioning after a few rides though, so if you aren't comfortable doing that look elsewhere perhaps. For £230 inc the Notubes kit woth £20 it is a good deal, and I would buy them again despite those issues and the fact that Superstar's customer support sucks, but if you are looking at spending £260 and not after Stan's rims & tubeless then I think York cycles are doing Hope Hoops for not far off that though possibly not with your rim choice.

People on Southern Downhill seem to like them.

Same as others got a crest set. Rear was terribly built. Cheap though.

I got a flow set and haven't had any problems. Both wheels are still true after a few hundred miles and some pretty embarrassing riding/crashing.

A mate of mine got a pair of their all-mountain wheels, they more or less fell apart after 2 days riding at glentress, in a 456. He contacted SS, they said "For that sort of riding, you need the downhill rims" 😆 Kid had been riding around on old OEM-spec Specialized XC rims for 2 years, the SS ones lasted 2 days.

Now he's got the DH rims which arrived and weren't that well built- uneven tension, slightly out of true. But they seem to be holding up to the awesome onslaught of Glentress red OK.

On the other hand I know people who've had very good experiences with them, it seems to be inconsistency rather than outright badness.

i have a set with the same hubs and spokes, very good for the money and easy to get replacement bearings.

I bought a pair of their own DH rims on evo hubs and although the freehub packed up in about 4 months I do think they were good value considering the abuse they get. SS asked me to send the wheel back, which was then back on the bike 3 days from me posting them. It has swallowed a rear mech and still stayed true. The front needed new bearings after about 6 months too. But they were only £170 I think. I'd get another pair (probably as soon as my 819s fold as I think they are about to!).

I'd rather pay extra for a decent set of Hopes.. Infact, I did. On all 4 sets of wheels.
But, as with everything, You pays yer money, you take yer chances..

I have a pair of Superstar Switch on Crests at £229 with all the tubeless stuff.
The wheels have been fine, no build or reliability issues, & weigh slightly less than a pair of Hope Pro II on 355's.

I have the custom built Superleggera ti hubs, cx-ray blade spokes and ZTR Alpine rims and they're brilliant so far, they were about £430. I've had them a few months and ridden them regularly and quite hard, everything still good.

Rear singlespeed wheel here. It's been fine for about a year so far - it did need some grease on the pawls when new though (it was making a horrible grinding sound).
