I am riding MM this year so have been told to stick mud tyres on.

This seems to mean skinny tyres to give greater mud clearance and to let the tyres cut through the mud to find grip.

    1) Does this mean running skinny tyres front and rear?

    2) Assuming there is plenty mud clearance would a fatter front tyre help or hinder?

    1) Yes.
    2) Hinder – you’ll just be carrying even more mud around.

Skinny IMO – cut through to what grip there is and if they do clog at least they collect less mud. Plus IME, MM isn’t that bumpy that you can’t cope with skinny tyres.

It’s not going to be wet and muddy, it is going to be beautifully sunny and dry. OK?
And yes, 2 skinny Mud-X 1.8s if it does happen to be, like the previous year I did it and was riding stuff loads couldn’t.

    Buy tyres?

I have loads of them hanging from the garage ceiling, surely some of them will have the tread grown back by now. Why else would you hang up worn out tyres?

Hmmm.. maybe now’s a good time to advertise my spare trailrakers… 🙂
