On the 13th august. Any of the Manchester posse around for a spin? I will have the Saturday daytime free. I'd love to meet up.
But if you come by your favoured public transport, are you sure you'll have your bike 🙂
I am free that weekend where do you want to ride?
Rivi , peaks , lakes or Wales?
I prefer rivi as i can ride it from my house.
Blimey I'm in Manchester that day too!
OOoh yes, what about a tandem duo? Will mrs. teej be available too.
Manchester area. Don't care where. I might not have a car available ( but might) don't want to go far tho anyway. I was wondering about checking out some of my old stomping grounds in south manchester but IIRC the riding ain't up to much
Bunnyhop - I doubt we will have the tandem - don't think MrsTJ wants to play but if another tandem team are about she might be pursuaded
If you and Junkyard get together, it'll be a long hair contest. Mine included.
Hey you cheeky monkey, there's loads of great proper riding here.south manchester but IIRC the riding ain't up to much
i might be tempted to bring my electric beast over for a spin. 😀
Might be down that way that weekend....not 100% yet. Rivi would be my preferred option.
Train up to Horwich Parkway or Blackrod for Rivi
Bunnyhop - been trying to remember where we used to ride but we left manchester in 1988 😳 Along the mersey from Chorlton and out towards poynton where a pal lived, along the irwell as well.
it'll be a long hair contest
no it wont.
Rivi is dooable from the train station from either adlington or horwich circa 20 mins from town centre by train
I will go with the consensus re route.
Can lend you a bike if you want depending in your height
****s sake - plan to leave Scotland for a weekend and half the clans follow me 😕
More than happy to go where there is decent ride. More than happy for anyone to join in. You do still have your gag Al?
I was thinking about visiting some of the old stomping ground but I am happy to go elsewhere
Along the mersey from Chorlton
i was just out there earlier this evening, but then again it's right where i live... tbh you're right though, it's a bit poor. in as much as it's flat as a pancake.
rivi would probably be the best idea.
Sounds like a plan...
Where you staying Teej??
Al, where you staying too fella?
I'm only about half hour from Town.. Would be good to catch up again.
I am staying with friends in Levenshulme
think im the only one on ere that hasnt visited 'Rivi' yet.... its not a million miles away either,,,. 🙄
Cool... I'll pop over for the catch up.. 🙂
ok shall we say rivvy TJ how far do you want to ride and how long?
Could we do 'Belmont/San marino descent, can we, can we?
No need for a firm decision now. But pencil in rivi - thats up by bolton way isn't it? Me - 30ish miles 4 or 5 hrs? Happy to go further / Depends how much climbing / how techy it all is
it hills and moors nothing too technical or overly hilly. It is by horwich so North of bolton but you can climb up from that side.
Heard it mentioned many a time. Seen it from the m61 as well
If you Do Rivi then I would be happy to show you around my land. I could "only" do Rivi though as I wont be able to be out all day due to parental commitments.
Awesome Dave... I'll be up for some guiding around Rivi again..
it is well worth a ride if you are in the area but not sure it needs to be on a to do list. San marino/belmont is a cracking descent- from the mast you will have seen from m61.
A big (12) group of us were up Rivi last night, San Marino descent was in the best condition i've seen for ages.
sounds like a plan can i come? after spending the last week being chairlifted to the top of mountains i feel the need to stretch my legs again.
Everyone welcome as far as I am concerned.
I will e-mail TJ and then do a big announcement up here for a northern STW ride. I have threatened a rivvy ride for ages. Moderately paced all welcome etc.
Gary.. did you loose two lads to a puncture at the bottom of San Marino ? I came through a massive group at Belmont Road that were waiting for them.
San Marino is indeed fast, the marbles are lethal though.
Also, there was a big group I bumped into in the gardens riding the lines that nearly got us MTB'ers kicked out of the gardens a few years ago 🙁
And not one application to ride my land... shocking.
TJ plus Cynic-Al? on a bicycling ride? It cannae be!
it's like in Ghostbusters - Don't cross the streams!
Elfin told me he may even be in Manchestershire at some point. It could be a Big Hitters Convention!
Did not want to disturb you whilst you were [s]in the pub[/s] riding 😛
How very dare you.. although the last STW RIVI ride ended like this:-

Yes, that was us !
Did you have a stw jersey on, & rode off towards Bolton on a red 5 Spot with white forks ? 'cos one of our group said 'Gaz, someones nicked your bike!!!!.....':
Pic taken at the bottom of the Ice Cream Run. ( I had rode over from Blackburn to meet up with the others for 7pm start )
Sorry to be a spoilsport for all you rivi lovers but it's not exactly easy to get to from Levenshulme, especially on a train (means going into picadilly, crossing manchester to victoria or at least crossing to the through platforms, another train out past Bolton and then a ride up to the trails), even more so when fro the same station the southbound trains go out into the Peak District.
As you say TJ the trails *in* south manchester are rubbish, but the trails south *of* manchester (or more accurately south-east) are far better. You could ride out from levenshulme, down to reddish vale and out to marple, or just get the train out to Middlewood or Disley.
I'm not saying the riding is rubbish around Rivington - just saying that there's riding that's just as good and a lot easier to get to. If you bring the tandem, we'll ride ours, or you can borrow ours if that makes things easier for you. mail in profile if you want to discuss 😉
In truth I am free that day but not in Mancs...unless TJ can give me a lift down? 😀
I'd actually be prepared to meat some of you lot, I might look at train tickets.
I am working on pursuance mrs TJ that a tandem ride is a good idea - if we bring the tandem we will have a car. Might anyway.
Otherwise I would ride to victoria and get the train to Rivi to get there.
I am happy to travel a bit for a better ride / to meet up with more folk. But I would prefer to ride straight from the house
However its more about meeting up with folk than anything else
Wahaaaaaaaaay! I can't see you winning this one nbt. You're going to have to learn to temper your northmanchestophobia mate 😉 Anyway - coming out your neck of the woods always involves the A6. And words can barely express how much i loathe that road!
Rivi's ace anyway. We'll be riding round there tomorrow.
Be good to see you on the trails uncle jezza. Will you need your passport? I wouldn't fancy the San Marino on a Tandem though 😯
As much as I like Rivi, you've got to agree with nbt that getting there is a biatch from Levenshulme on public transport. Starting at Reddish Vale or The Roman Lakes make better sense, there's some great riding round there too.
Carl
As it happens Binners, we're riding Lee quarry tomorrow and Rivi on Sunday - I'm not phobic, I just appreciate that riding from home is great when you have such great trails. More, I'm not really understanding the idea of a visitor travelling all the way up there when there's riding closer to their location. Even in a car, levenshulme to rivi is going to take around an hour
I can pick people up en-route from Sandiway...
Don't mind swinging through Manchester to pick bikes & people up.
Oi ! no fighting 🙂
Meh, train £60+, out of budget.
Gaz, you've nicked my bike.
That was me... Lovely evening for a run out.. Took this just after I saw you all.

TJ thats the weekend that I'm away. As your down don't ride Rivi- ride the Peaks to get a good flavour of what the area has to offer. Pook etc could organise a small ride?
Thats a shame Hora - or is it just an excuse 'cos you don't really exist?
I have ridden in the peak before a few times. Really I am more interested in the social side of getting a posse together for a spin. I'd prefer not to travel too far but will go with a concensus.
I'd also love to meat you. 😯
😯
Where is lee quarry? is it near Rivi?
means going into picadilly, crossing manchester to victoria or at least crossing to the through platforms, another train out past Bolton and then a ride up to the trails
the train goes from Picadilly has done for about 20 years - when did you last get the train . I think you can get to Bolton from Victoria
I dont care where we ride I will ride where we agree but the Peaks is a pain to get to if you are not in South Manchester [ or from North of manchester]- I can get to the Lakes just as quickly tbh. TJ pick a place those who want to come will come those who dont wont.
EDIT: NO 30 miles apart Lee Quarry is a trail centre with a route over to thingy Cragg. No chance getting there on public transport - IMHO- but probably as easy to get to as Rivvy from Manchester by car. Its OK for what it is but I am not a trail centre fan so not in the best position to pass comment on its merits
I'm afraid Hora is real, very real 😉Thats a shame Hora - or is it just an excuse 'cos you don't really exist?
Hora - you didn't say goodbye to me last Sunday.
If we ride 'Rivi', I think I'll opt for my own bike rather than the tandem. As Binners mentioned above, the tandem will be a bit scary on the Belmont/San Marino descent. Lowy should know 😉
I'm going to Scotland that weekend or I'd gladly avoid you all more locally 🙂
BWD - 🙁 bastid!
BUnnyhop - this one? looks ok to me - just needs a bit of mincing in places 🙂
Bunny' I almost fell off the back of the tandem laughing when my bars started turning the front riders seat round to 45degrees 😆
aye that is the one cracking descent
TJ your welcome to come down sarf too. LOL.
Manchester is down south ! Ta tho.
I suspect if we use the whole UK as a reference point your home and Manchester are both in the Midlands 😯
A pal from Manchester came up here for a party - he was most miffed at being introduced as my pal from down south 🙂
T.J it's One of my favourite descents. Yes we're good at mincing down things on the tandem.
Hora - we rode 'The Banks' on it the other night (your favourite switchback descent, the one with all the drops) at the Roman lakes, amazingly Jules managed to get us around that sharp bermed switch back.
i'd like to meet TJ too.
Please can I bribe my way on to this one with the promise of " cakey goodness ". 😛 . Please...
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm cake Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
*rubs tummy*
Hora - we rode 'The Banks' on it the other night (your favourite switchback descent, the one with all the drops) at the Roman lakes, amazingly Jules managed to get us around that sharp bermed switch back.
Sorry to butt-in, can anyone point me in the direction of this Roman Lakes descent?('The Banks')
I ride round there all the time but have no idea what these names mean or what any of the trails are nicknamed etc. I wouldn't want to think I was missing out. I can't recall a switch-back descent though so maybe I am....
Duggan - From Mellor cross, go straight across following the tarmac lane descending. After a couple of hundre metres with the golf course on your right, there is a path at the side of the wall. This pings you up, then it's a drop (fairly steep) onto a 2 way split, take the right turn with lots of steps (new work by the council to sanitise and stop water errosion). This track will ziz zag it's way down with a tight bermed turn in the middle, loose mable rocks most of the way down, just to give it that extra edge. Spits you out onto the lane.
Bunnyhop, while you're here, BFO's with added marshmallow pieces, what do you reckon. Yay or nay ?
Looks like Devils Chocolate Cake could be on the list as well.. ^^^^ 🙂
Graeme - you can never have enough cake (includes extra bits in/on cake), so yay.
Carrot cake sounds lovely though.
The ovens going to be busy on the Friday! 😯
Duggan - the banks is this bit here
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=398105&Y=387410&A=Y&Z=120
best ridden travelling west, downhill from Mellor Cross
Graeme - chocolate cake FTW.
cakes you say
I will do my usual [ depending on numbers]
Pineapple upside down cake, chocolate cake and scones [ might do muffins - getting in tot hem at the minute.
I can do some carrot cake as well if required depending on numbers.
TJ - me and Jake will be up for this, I'll sort it out with Nick for directions.
Al, we can prolly pick you up.
This sounds like fun and I'd love a guided ride at Rivington.
It'd be nice to catch up with some of the Pootle alumni too as I missed out on Tons' Delamere ride.
Ballocks, Ballocks and, thrice, Ballocks!
Will I be working? No (makes a change..)
Will I be on the M6 / M5 en-route to holiday, yep...
Would have loved to catch up with one and all - though we'll be en-route to the general vicinity of the Quantocks and, I'm allowed to take my bike 🙂
We can meet enroute Mark.. Easiest might be the BP Garage on the M62 J 20...
Then head around to the M61... 🙂
Sweet Nick
