Here is my quandry:

Have: Edge 705 with UK TOPO map
Hopefully getting: New Edge 800
Sell: Edge 705 Unit
Need to: Transfer TOPO license to new Edge 800 & remove from 705 to sell

Initial response from Garmin Support:

Unfortunately the mapping unlock process only allows for the mapping to
be used on a specific Garmin device. This unlock information is not
transferable and will only be useable in conjunction with the Garmin
device for which it is intended. As a result, if you would like to use
this same mapping on the Edge 800 it will be necessary to purchase a new
copy of the mapping for use specifically with this device.

Am I confused or is Garmin?

Erm..... I believe there are such things as [cough]keygen[/cough] programs on this here interweb for such matters.

alledgedly!

having said that, there's really no need as the GB Discoverer maps on the Edge 800 do turn by turn navigation etc etc.

Can you use openMTB maps on the 800 instead of the topomaps?

If you were to Google "jetmouse" you'd find all sorts of tools for manipulating maps

Yup just wanted to do it legally if possible ๐Ÿ™‚

I got the 50K OS map coming with the 800 just didn't want to chuck the TOPO in the bin as it were - maybe I'll just sell it with the 705 then?

Seems barmey to me - So basically if I broke the 705 or the unit failed I have to buy a new TOPO license - is that not against euro law or something or nuffin?

Out of interest, what is the best map to buy for Garmin 705, the only option seems to be the TOPO Great Britain no way of just getting South West/Wales for example?

Try ringing them, They helped me transfer Topo GB from one Vista (which got crushed) to another. I think Topo GB is licenced for up to two devices. I've found they're web help a bit pants but both times I've ended up ringing them they've been very good.

Stumpy - fraid not you can tx the license from one unit to another of the same model i.e the old one failed & replaced but not between models. Only one license per Topo was what I was told via web?

It's pretty easy just to generate another unlock code

I'll give it a go when I get my 800 but they say 705 to 800 requires another license? I am not sure whether we are talking about a pre-installed SD card or the DVD - I have the DVD?

I'd still ring them. I was told if I wreck my lastest unit I won't be able to transfer the maps to a new unit unless I send the wrecked unit back to them as proof that I don't have it installed on more than 2 units.
