I want to plot a route (Tour du Mont Blanc) that includes France, Italy & Switzerland. To date I can't find a mapping programme that covers the whole route.

Google Earth obviously covers all the ground and the paths I want to use all appear to be visible. As far as I know, drawing a route (like TrackLogs etc) isn't part of the standard functionality.

Anyone know of any kind of app or plug-in to Google Earth that would do what I wnat to do. A quick search this morning revealed 3D Route Builder. Anyone used it?

Try using http://www.mapmyride.com/ That's got pretty good route building tools and google earth imaging

This was part of the Google Earth Plus licence, but they've done away with that option (it's now either free or Pro).

Google is your friend, download as a kml file then can upload into google earth or google maps.

edit: sorry just realised you want to track your own route. Probably no help to you at all then. Sure you can plot routes in google maps though.

in fact you can, google maps> my maps> create new map.

on a similar vibe is there a tool out there to manage paths? I want to be able to merge paths recorded on my GPS on different trips into one layer? I also want to be able to clean up routes (i.e. I have been down 1 track twice with the GPS and the plots are slightly different so I want to merge them into one path in my GE layer). I know I can do some moving about of points in GE and I can join layers together by hacking the KML file but are there any tools out there that can help?

GPS Utility should be able to do your "path management"

MapMyRide looks like it might well do what I want - I'll have a play with it later when I get home.
