  • Weekly photo challenge. 31.1.11 – 6.2.11 Public Art.
  • Following Kunstler’s suggestion, I’ve gone for Public Art this week.
Subway or end of terrace murals.
    Chalk hillside figures.
    Sculpture trails.
    Artistic graffiti.
Whatever else you can find that fits the description.

I know it’s going to get confusing if I post next weeks subject in advance, so remember, this starts at midnight tonight. We’re still on last weeks challenge today (Sunday).

There’s been lots of suggestions for themes. We’ll get through them all eventually, don’t be offended if I’ve not picked yours yet. Remember, the nearer the summer it is, the more popular it will be.

Just bumping this up as it starts in 4 hours.
I’ll be making a slight detour on my commute to get a hand painted advertising mural.

Oh good one. I hope I get to see some good contemporary art out in the landscape. I may have hampered myself with this as it’s hard to find any art in north norfolk – maybe should have saved this til I’m back in Edinburgh.

erm… and I had another idea for a challenge: Fakes. Plastic dinosaurs, concrete cows and my favourite – mobile phone masts disguised as trees. Just another idea for the pot.

    More from Bewdley.

There are stainless steel letters set in to the quayside spelling out words connected with the town’s history.
A wherry is a small ferry, a sort of water taxi.
Hafren is the Welsh name for the Severn.

Each letter is engraved with a local theme.
This one is oak leaves and acorns for the Wyre Forest.

I had an entertaining morning touring the town to find photo’s for this thread – Having done a Google search I was amazed at how much we had here so I organised myself a little route and off I went . . . . .

I chose this picture cos the sculpture was commissioned by Sustrans and you can see the pump track in the background 🙂 Its called ‘Bearings’

Ace thread MTG – if anyone wants to see more of my morning just click the picture

Pizza Street, Lima Peru. Lomo Medium Format

    Utilitarian art.
Long before the days of laser cut vinyl graphics, railway companies had teams of signwriters hand painting the lettering on every single waggon.
In today’s throw away society, it’s nice to see a reminder of the craftsmanship that went in to such mundane items.

And finally for today, some genuine 1960s psychedelia.

Picture 061 by Vegan Graham, on Flickr

The story behind this, if I’ve remembered it right, is that the son of the local “Lord of the Manor” was in with the In crowd during the ’60s and held parties at the big house, no doubt involving free love and exotic herbal cigarettes.
To get his guests in the mood, he painted part of the fence in bright colours.
    This is all that remains.

Certainly is – I managed 2 laps this morning on the road bike which is better than usual nothing like this guy though!

Do signposts and arches count as ‘public art’?

They can do, if they’re artistic.
Aren’t buskers a form of public art anyway ?

Whats next weeks project BTW ?

    Dunno yet.
I quite liked the idea of bikes under water. Do people like the cryptic ones like that ?
I can think of several overhead pipelines, canal locks, weirs and reservoir embankments locally where I could photograph my bike “under water” without getting it wet.
I’m surprised no ones thought about linking this idea up with this thread http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/interesting-unknown-engineering-landmarks-in-the-uk

Tbh I was a bit disappointed by what I found in Bristol today.

“Dick Chicken” seems to be pretty prolific around the docks. I liked this one best.

And I figured that I had to include a Banksy so here’s the one from the side of the Thekla (a boat nightclub)

    (better pic of it here)

just in time with a bit of politics…
bit faded, an old pro-ETA mural in Asteasu, Basque Country. Translates as something like “Fight & Build Freedom”.
I’ve seen ‘better’ but don’t really like taking photos of stuff like this 😐

    No other suggestions ?
I’ll stick with under water for next week then.
Don’t take it too literally, Kunstler. 😉
