Judging by the FAIL thread, it's not going to be a tightly fought competition.

surely the STW definaition of fast is unrelated to kph but more who spends the most on a pimpy race bike, that in the hands of a pro, would be capable of going fast?

so that definately rules all you pitch pro riders out!

Surely Dougal has to be up there in the XC category.

What a brilliant race format. Four people in each round, 4x style, drag racing on a road downhill! Can we have that at the next STW member organised event please?

I bought that No Fear t-shirt from Noahs Ark Cycles back about 12-13 years ago - later the same day I took it back and exchanged it for 'It's not how good you are, it's how bad you want it!' 😉

Thing about fast riders is that they miss all the nice views and scenery and fall off a lot. Think tortoise and hare 🙂

I believe Elbry Sandland is still a member of stw following his excellent contributions to the recent thread about him. His comments there would suggest that he may out of the rest of us be the the fastest at both DH and singlespeed xc with a beer in each hand.

I am usually slow.

But I can find alarming bursts of speed when the cake shop is close...

too true.
i ride with a large group, about 20 of us, ages from mid 20s to mid 50s.
last autumn we went to cytb for the weekend.
a trio of us are a bit steady to say the least.
after the 1st mile of the beast of brenin the younger ones looked a bit miffed waiting
a spokesman for them said 'i have a idea, lets split into 2 groups, faster and slower'.
so i waited at the back along with 2 more.
off we went, after about a mile or so on the 2nd rocky decsent we passed 2 of them puntured.
at the bottom of the descent 1 more had punctured.
we carried on, 1 more tagged onto the slow group.
i said to the other 3 'we can take it steady now, they wont catch us'
my mate asked why, i said ' because they will be going crazy on the downhills trying to catch us, and they will puncture all day long'
to cut a long story short we rode the entire beast of brenin route and they never caught us.
we had been back at the cafe, and drank 3 bottle of the organic cider there before they turned up.
i ofcourse did not rub it in for the rest of the weekend.... 😉

jcromton and moi have some not bad results.

1st Hit the North, Dawn Raid, 4th SXC champs in sport, 2nd Relentless 24, and cromton was 2nd in the SXC sport series. I was only about 6th I think. There's a load more but that'd be boasting...

I reckon njee20 and simply_oli_y are probably the quickest, I doubt any elite riders would come on here.

Not if we enter on the tandem. all up weight approaching 30 stone - eat our dust boy 🙂

I know there are a couple of fast riders on here. Does the lady who won the SXC thingy ( IIRC) want to stand up / be outed?

Hold on, I thought that glupton = smee ???

N'est pas?

MANY MANY years ago bought some forks off a guy who was on the old Singletrack forum. He was in the winning team at SITS 24hr race back in 2002/3 iirc, was a very nice bloke as well as being ridiculously quick on an XC bike for a sustained period of time!

This calls for a race!

cannock chase (its about as central as trails get) , 1 lap, mass start in a megaavelanche style?

Any niche alowed, including drop bar'd wierdo's.

anyone else up for it?

The usual hare and tortoise speed or stamina replys. There is a saying that goes something like. A young bull says to the old bull lets run down the field and shag one of the cows. The old bull replies lets walk down and shag the lot!! For me slow and steady is alot more satisfying.

29" here 🙂

I'm honoured to have been nominated, but certainly not at the moment!

Will Simmons lurked on here, he's been very quick in the past, and has threatened to come back! George Budd certainly used to crop up (Gee), he's bloody fast, although I should be as quick as him when I've actually done some speed work... Dunno if Ben Thomas ever comes on here, he's an Elite now.

Sure there's some very fast not racers too frankly!

[ big head ] I am fairly confident I'm one of very few members to have won an NPS race though, even if it was only Sport [ /big head ]

Surely its not about being the fastest rider. Surely its about being the best all round rider? I would class myself as a good all round rider. I ride quite a few cycling disaplines from road time trials, to MTB xc races to trials riding. I am even racing my BMX on Sunday! As I get older speed doesnt matter to me so much. Its more about the enjoyment and the skills development. I am really in to my jumping at the moment. I just like to ride bikes.

Matt

Surely its not about being the fastest rider.

It's what I asked.. Best all-round rider or most diverse rider is another thread 🙂 I was mainly curious as to how many serious racers there are, and how many expert/elites there are.

I'd be doing well in Expert or Master if I didn't have 10kg of spare lard 🙁

Well there's definitely 3 experts: Me, Gee and Oli Y, and one Elite: ac282

So, a reasonable number of 'serious' racers. Aracer's obviously no slouch either!

Not as fast as you guys on a bike, but pretty good at some other stuff too (but then you knew that?)

i'm currently still sport nick (junior last year) but if the 1st few races go well, i'll see if bc will let me move to expert.
up to 3rd cat on the road now, so i can race the easter 4 day!

and bikey thats true,
even when it goes to all round riding, i'd say i'm quite good there (up till now others have said i'm good).

with rather quick tt times, and decent road racing results etc, then being as quick downhill as up. going out jumping one day, then racing xc the next is what keeps it interesting.
