IMBA rated Scotland as one of the best places in the world to ride mountain bikes, an accolade that in no small part can thank the Seven Stanes project that characterise this area. Comprising seven well established, funded and high quality trail centres. The natural beauty of the area and well established tourist industry make this a world class destination for mountain bikers.

Blairadam
Blairadam Forest dates back to the 18th century when a chap called Sir William Adam bought the estate and planted trees to enhance the landscape. The Adam family (no connection to Morticia) still own an estate adjacent to the forest and one of the current generation can occasionally be seen MTBing in the forest named in his family’s honour.

Carron Valley
Carron Valley mountain bike trails are fast, fun and purpose built for year round use – guaranteed to entice you back for more! The routes feature testing singletrack climbs, flowing descents and stunning views of the reservoir and surrounding areas. There is something for everyone at Carron Valley – links provide a short fun route or something longer and more challenging. Whatever you choose the emphasis is firmly on fun!

Dalbeattie
Out near the coast in the trail-centre rich area of Dumfries & Galloway is Dalbeattie. No big mountains or remote epics but it manages to mix technically demanding terrain with great views while it’s Green and Blue routes still provide a fantastic day out for all the family.

Glentress
Glentress is the original mountain bike trail centre in Scotland. What started as the brain child of local trail building legend Pete Laing and the Forestry Commission has morphed into one of the UK’s best-known venues for man-made trails, the jewel in the crown of the 7Stanes project, with something to suit all levels of ability and fitness.

Kirroughtree
Situated in the depths of the Galloway forest park it can seem like 30 mins too far from the rest of the riding but don’t let the extra distance put you off, this is one of the best around. Written by Michael W Smith.
