I've put some much bigger that recommended forks on my old Kinesis Easton XC Maxlight - sorted the steep angles and low bottom bracket whilst adding the security of a 20mm axle. Trouble is that I'm now paranoid about snapping the frame.

Anyone had any nasty experiences of rapid failure or should I just listen out for the warning ticks of impending doom. Or should I just buy the C456 that my concience is telling me to do?

How long are your forks? I had some 130mm forks on an Maxlight for a couple of years. It was used for racing and general whizzing around the woods. All wheels on the ground stuff. No problems.

it did get absolutely ragged for about four years though, ran Reeba 115mm on it. It snapped after six months of fittting rigid forks. Definitely has my moneys worth out of it, will probably get another one at some point in time. One of the best handling frames I've ridden.

Well I've just swapped the 6 year old TALAS 32s for Wotans - 120 to 160 travel. Yeah, I know it sounds stoopid, but it's turned a difficult to love bike into a joy to ride. It's rocky and the trails are steep where I live so the angles and low bb were a pain but it's now pretty awesome. The XC pro is made of a completely different material (kinesium???)really harsh compareed with the Easton tubing that is really forgiving, more akin to steel. I still feel that I'm asking for trouble although I kid myself by saying that a Maxle is so much safer that a QR skewer on flexy forks. The frame's only been ridden for 2 years 'in anger'.

Stoopid on what way - it rides great, am I going to break my neck though?

Personally, I wouldn't be riding a lightweight XC hardtail designed for ~100mm forks with 160mm forks, it sounds like it's gonna end really badly.

This, I'd get a new frame.

Yeah - I think a C456 is a better option as I'm loving the ride and I like my neck! Thanks for all advice. 😉
