We've junked BT Vision after a year and gone to Freesat with one of the Humax PVR / receiver things. The picture quality seems excellent and a good choice of HD content, but not much sport...

We're now left with the BT Vision box - the guy at BT said we can keep it and use it as a Freeview box, but, from searching on the AV forums (and trying it out at home) it seems to require to be connected to broadband for it to function as a Freeview box and for the EPG to work. The box boots but doesn't get any further than the 'please wait' splash screen when we connect it up. We have a wireless network at home - from the BT Homehub - but I don't know how to connect the BT Vision box to it without it being hardwired in.

Where it's destined to live is not ideal for hardwiring - is there a way of connecting something to it to allow it connect wirelessly to the broadband connection? I suspect this may be a thicko question, but I can't get my head around it right now!

thanks in advance, STW IT Massive.

Use the ethernet adapters if you don't want to hardwire direct from the homehub

I've never used our BT Vision box on subscription. Its plugged into the BT mains transponder near the TV with a network cable, the Homehub is also plugged into one of the transponders at the other side of the room. The two talk happily to one another (although a Vodaphone mobile seems to cause interference) and I've got the EPG and recording facilities. I can also buy stuff on demand if I want.

Thanks both for the suggestions; really appreciated. The problem I think is that where it's going to go, there's no network connections available or phone sockets - is there some kind of wireless way of getting it to talk?

As said above you use the plug in ethernet adaptors, they plug into the mains power sockets, one at the home hub and the other at the BT Vision box, job done!

The two adaptors talk wirelessly to each other, you should have had 2 when the box was first fitted. If you didn't use them before they are probably in the box, unless you threw it out.

You can also use a Game adapter to plug it into the wireless network.

Slightly off-topic but have you tried BBC iPlayer on the Humax? If so what's it like.

Wow - there is a god! Thanks guys - and especially LMT for pointing me in absolutely the right direction (though I love you all equally!). I went up in the loft and staring me in the face amongst the debris, frames, tyres, general cack was an unopend box containing 2x Ethernet Adaptors. I never even knew I had them!

There's a wider story to all this though - it means Mrs GTTH can do the ironing in the utlity room, and for that, there is no price!

Pembo - I've not tried iPlayer yet on the new box. Is it available via the red button? I'll have a look and let you know.

Thanks again STW IT Gurus - you're little short of amazing. 😀 😀 😀

iPlayer is only available through your internet connection so you have to cable the Humax to your router.
