If your looking for tradesmen in an area your not too familiar with is Check-A-Trade still the best place to start? In the absence of word of mouth recommendations.

I'd go with a local facebook recommendation rather than check a trade.

Checkatrade is worth a look but it's really designed for the trader to gain more work (imho) although it's not marketed like that.

I would say no.
I looked into it around 5 years ago for my business, it was basically a list of people who had paid to be on their list.
Personal recommendation is the best thing, or, look into the local free mags/papers to get a few quotes.
The ones who are prompt in repyling, quoting and asnswering questions are probably the people you should look at employing.

As I just posted elsewhere, try mybuilder.com ? (Full disclosure, one of the founders is a friend of mine.)

All these sites take any builder on for a fee, after first checking they exist as a real person, they all promise a lot, but its down to the individual builder and customer relationship to make things work, for both sides.

What sort of thing do you need work doing on.

The survey highlighted issues with damp as well as deteriorating wooden windows.

It is free to sign up and you don't need to be a regular user to use the groups for recommendations.

My mrs had tried a few to do work on the house

All very poor but you can't argue with my Mrs, rather than wait for people I work with in construction she just employs numpties

Its baffling really

I do enjoy asking for their RAMs and programme though 🙂
