The exhaust warning light has just lit up on our '07 MkV Golf 2.0TDi. A bit of research seems to indicate that the most common cause is a failing coolant temperature sensor.
Anybody changed one of these themselves? Looks fairly straightforward but any tips would be appreciated.

coolant temp sensors aren't that common on these age vw, not unheard of though, eml could be anything, check your fuses under the bonnet fuse 12 i think for the intake flap motor blows, this also powers one of your cooling fans, replacing the fuse can work sometimes but more often the intake flap needs replacing. as i said though eml on could be anything, best to get it fault read.

Had the exhaust warning light come on on my works van recently (VW Caddy 2.0TDi). VW said it was probably a clogged particulate filter (common if vehicle is used for short journeys or sits in traffic a lot). Advice was to go and cane it for 15 minutes or so. Seemed to do the trick as light hasn't come back on since. Worth a try?

The two times the exhaust warning light has come on in my 05 Caddy 2.0TDI - it's been the Lambda Sensor. Have no idea what you do though, as my bloke is in the trade and gets it sorted for me.. 😉

I would go with a clogged particulate filter, needs regenerating. Go for a 30 minute drive with high engine revs.

Is it the exhaust light or engine management light?
I know on slightly older VAG diesel cars the glow plug light could mean brake lamp failure!

Defo the exhaust light, and no DPF on this car (thankfully). The coolant was on minimum the other day (when the light came on) so I've topped it up but light still showing.
Car is running perfectly normally. Will try and get the error code read.

adscatt: I think you're right. Just checked the fuse under the bonnet (f24 in my book - coolant fan) and it was blown, replaced it and within 2 miles it was blown again.
So if the intake flap motor is causing this, is it big job?

I'll answer my own post. If it is the inlet flap/motor (the symptoms are all there) a new one is going to cost £227 delivered (Europarts) and my local indi has quoted £65 + VAT to fit it which seems OK.

not a big job but can be fiddly, fair price from indi garage probably 1 hour labour

Cheers adscatt. They've quoted for a VW part but it's £100 more and I can't really see the point - unless you can provide one!

Same thing has just happened with my wife's polo - turns out it is the Lamda sensor and a previous owner has had the cat cut open and the contents removed!

--> new cat & £££ 🙁

Had the same on my Leon - Lambda sensor. Often seemed to be cleared by a couple of tanks of premium, but at todays prices a new sensor is probably cheaper.

Sharkbait, chances are they'll be the same part (from the same manufacturer) but with a genuine VW part you will get 2 years parts warranty for that component, can't comment on the warranty on the non genuine one though.

Just thought I'd give you the update as the car went in to my local (VW Specialist) indi this morning....
Adscatt, you were bang on the money. Diagnostics showed two faults, first was an open circuit (blown fuse) and the second was the non-responsive inlet flap motor.
Total cost £227 for the motor and £65.00 labour.
