hi all, have searched the forum for a similar topic but couldn't see one, my musical tastes are varied, from ACDC, METALICA, Bon Jovi down to Amy Mcdonald. absolutely love the sound of Guitar, the lynard skinner solo in free bird really is amazing and i think i'm damn good at air guitar, LoL.
Anyway at the age of 19 i was told by a vindictive mother of a girlfriend that i shouldnt bother learning as i have never played any other instruments.
So is 38 told old to start and also i'm right handed but air guitar left handed so which hand guitar should i try???
thanx.
Why would it be too old?!?
With regard to which hand guitar to buy, my advice would be to go to a decent shop and ask them.
Your not too old, you will never be a Peter Green, but you can be knocking out a few numbers within few months.
Or you could just practice your air guitar & enter for this.
Not too old. Vindictive old hag gave nonsense advice - somewhat surprisingly.
I would suggest that as you are right handed you will almost certainly be a right handed guitar player.
42 just started last year. Love it.
38? the only major limit really on how good you can get is how much practice you can/are prepared put in..... simple as.
If you're right handed then get a right handed guitar. Almost all the literature and chord dictionaries are for right-handers so why make it harder on y'self? 🙂
Not too old.
Find a pub that has casual jam nights - folk nights even, so you can start by going "chunga chunga chunga" with everybody else, then get talked into having a stab at a song yourself. There's nothing like it for speeding up the learning process; realising you're as good as them; developing your own style.
IMO its much easier to get to a high standard now compared to say 25 years ago when i started. From tab sites, youtube etc, the resources are endless. even if it takes you 5 years, when you're 43 you'll be a pretty handy guitar player - sounds worth it to me. just go for it.
yes not to old
Guitar depends on what style you want to play - acoustic rock etc I assume you want an elctriv guitar so I am of no use to you on this front having never owned one.
Never too old. My grandpa started violin at 60 odds. In addition to being pretty good on the guitar, piano, trumpet and a couple of other instruments. I think he was aiming for the one man band type. 🙂
thanx all, i'm gonna sort out some spare dosh and go for it then.
Accoustic i reckon.
Is 58 too old to go mountain biking?
mattymer, go for it. I started classical guitar lessons two years ago at 36 and passed my grade 3 exam in December with a distinction.
My previous musical history comprised entirely of being thrown out of recorder class in primary school for whistling.
I started at 40 with a 12quid guitar out of the local paper. In retrospect the huge mistake I made was not getting regular lessons esp as I had the spare cash then. The biggest prob I have found with self teaching is falling into long periods where I don't seem to make an progress and cannot get to where I want to be.
Mr Woppit -
Is 58 too old to go mountain biking?
Plenty of people tell me that it is but I just take no notice.
I've just started again (aged 44) after a 31 yr gap! Loving it!!
I learnt 5 string banjo in my mid thirties. practise little and often. keep your guitar out so its always handy. ten minutes every day is better than an hour once a week. try night school.
