[Closed] Specialized Tricross 2011 - what's the fork problem?

  • I bought a Specialized Tricross Sport 2011 a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it on road and tracks, Yesterday I went into my local branch of the Edinburgh Bike Coop to buy some lights and when I remarked on how much I was enjoying the Tricross I had bought from them they asked if it had carbon forks and when I confirmed it did they showed me a notice saying that Specialized had found a problem with the fork and advised all owners to stop riding these bikes immediately (it also applies to Sirrius and Vita models with carbon forks). They said the notice had been there for a week but they had no further information about what the problem was or what Specilalized (or they) were going to do about it. Edinburgh Bike Coop and Evans Cycles have removed these bikes from their websites.
  • Does anyone have any more information about what is going on here? Are my carbon forks going to disintegrate when I put the brakes on sharply going downhill? I have stopped riding mine because it sounds like a serious problem but what is going to happen now? A recall and alloy forks retrofitted? How long will that take?

  • Any information would be gratefully received

Went to pick up my new Tricross Sport 2011 yesterday, the bike shop said they couldn't sell it to me at the moment because of this safety notice.

The shop told me they're waiting for some sort of tool to test if it's OK and if it is then they can sell it to me. If it's not, the forks need replacing by Specialized. I won't be charged any extra (I hope)

Is it just on new Tricross bikes? It's just that I know at least a couple of people with those bikes. 😐

" the Tricross I had bought from them "

so they sold you the bike, knew the spec of the bike obviously, knew your address as the purchaser, knew the bike had a safety notice against it, but didn't notify you.

    hmmm

Well actually it was worse than that because I booked my wife's Vita Elite in for a service with them in a week's time and they didn't make any mention of the safety notice which also applies to that bike. I await a reply from them on corporate risk management.

I believe it is just 2011 models.

Contact Specialized directly. They're really good at answering customer support emails and calls.

I have now received a reply from Specialized UK but I don't think it makes things any clearer. They say they have issued a dealer level stop sell on existing stock of these bikes but have not advised dealers to contact existing owners or issued a recall. So my interpretation is that they are aware of a problem that they deem serious enough to not sell any more of these bikes but not serious enough to recall existing bikes at present - which leaves owners who have them and know of the potential problem rather in limbo! Presumably the notice in Edinburgh Bike Coop which I was shown is something the Edinburgh Bike Coop have put up on their own initiative.

I now have a reasonable explanation of the issue from Specialized. They say that there have been one or two failures of the forks at the brake bosses but all the failures have occurred at ODI or the first ride. Thus they are not selling new ones until the dealers have a tool to test the forks (as the poster above was told) but their assessment at the moment appears to be that ones currently in use don't pose a significant risk, which seems to have some sense. I do highly recommend the Tricross Sport as an excellent road bike for heavier riders who want a relaxed geometry, a stable ride and a triple chainset to get up steep hills (my personal needs), I have ridden a lot of miles on mine in the last few weeks and lost a lot of weight doing so.

I do think the Edinburgh Bike Coop could have thought more carefully about the dissemination of information before putting up their 'don't ride it notice'.

Certini, from where I mail ordered mine, rang me today to tell me of the problem and tell me to book it into a dealer or concept store.

I phoned my bike shop today to arrange new tyres for my 2011 Tricross. I've had loads of punctures and told Specialized UK who offered to pay for better ones. Bike shop told me they'd sent me a letter about the fork prob and recall, which I haven't received yet. They said Spesh are replacing the forks free of charge and giving a £10 voucher for their products.

Advice I got was not to ride it, officially, but if there's a problem the front brake will be loose where it is fixed to the forks. Mine feels OK so I'll carry on until the new forks are fitted.

liverboy is right, they are replacing the forks free of charge and giving a £10 voucher.

I was told they're replacing the forks on all 2011 Tricross bikes now and it will be 2 weeks until I get my bike.
